IRMS Conference 2016: Thoughts from our Conference Director

I am hugely excited about the IRMS Conference 2016 starting on Sunday. It is my first year as Conference Director and there has been a lot to to learn and get involved with; however I have enjoyed every minute. I also appreciate all the effort that goes into organising this residential event with many facets and I extend a huge thanks to both colleagues on the IRMS Executive and at Revolution Events.

Hopefully the weather in Brighton will be lovely, although with the great content, exciting social events, highly interesting array of vendors exhibiting and the first ever conference Fringe there will be plenty to keep everyone indoors! There will be many highlights including superb sessions, Superhero fancy dress and of course Brian Blessed! Above all I look forward to seeing so many colleagues and friends and I will be delighted to hold as many discussions as possible around what members would like to see happening at future conferences.

IRMS Conference 2016: Groups & Goddard

Well this year’s conference is going to be even more exciting for me than ever before and this is because it is my first year on the Exec as Groups Director. I am very much looking forward to actually having the opportunity to meet more of our members face to face this year, both new and old members and hopefully those considering joining the IRMS too, including catching up with all the Group Chairs too, in one room. Lots to talk about and lots to achieve over the conference period, and most of all making sure everyone enjoys the conference and gets the most out of it that they possible can.

Everything I do in my voluntarily role is about making sure that our Group Chairs have the support they require, the platform and the tools they need to do their job. But more importantly that we all work in collaboration as a team to ensure we not only meet our members expectations but that we actively strive to exceed them. Over the course of conference I will be looking for a volunteer to take up the role as Group Chair for the Midlands.  Our existing Chair has decided to step down due to work commitments so the hunt is on for a new Group Chair. There is also the exciting relaunch of the North Group taking place in June, which is set to be quite an event.  Anyone interested in either of these two areas please do make sure you come and speak to me at conference.

Day 1 of the conference you will see from the main conference programme the breakout sessions for you to attend.  Anyone working within Family/Children’s services would certainly benefit by attending The Goddard Inquiry Workshop that is being hosted by Madi McAllister, Information Governance and RM Officer & David Smith, Assistant Director: Records and Information Governance Services. They will be looking at IICSA (the Goddard Inquiry) to review what the Goddard Inquiry is and how its findings affect records and information managers and organisations.

There will also be an introduction to the IRMS Goddard Working Group and information on how to contact them. I strongly recommend, especially if you are working in Family/Children’s Services to consider attending the workshop.  You will have the opportunity to broaden your knowledge about the inquiry but to also listen to colleagues from Scotland and Wales who have first hand experience working on similar inquiries. The learning outcomes from the breakout session will enable you to take back what you have learnt to your own place of work and assist you with preparing your organisation for the inquiry.

IRMS Conference 2016: SuperHero Training

It feels like 5 minutes since my first conference but I realised it 7 years.  As conference date gets closer and closer,  I feel a sense of excitement.  Despite 7 years passing, I can’t help but feel that this is the event of the year for me to meet my likeminded colleagues to network with each other and to get that swell of updates and learnings.     

I’m a strong believer in not fighting battles on your own; when you have a network of people out there who may have already done the same thing before and who knows;  you might the person that someone else is wanting to learn from?  I’ve been in Records Management for nearly a decade, and I’ve only just started touching SharePoint whereas I have spoken to people at IRMS Conference who have been working with SharePoint since its original launch in 2001! People who are 15 years ahead of me.  People I can learn from.  I’m lucky if I can edit the font on a page right now, let alone anything else!   I’ve had previous experience of EDRMS but I’m sure most of you will agree that SharePoint appears to be a beast of its own! Its for that reason I’m looking forward to the SharePoint Café on the Tuesday afternoon, that’s if I have any more brain space left after the rest of the conference!

There are some fantastic things happening in the Oxford Suite this year; but if you’re not sure what session to attend and find yourself with clashing sessions AND your superhero skill doesn’t extend to being in two places at once then have no fear…  The Oxford Suite is being recorded. Unfortunately if the two clashing sessions are in  break out rooms, I can only offer you to keep tabs on other sessions by viewing #IRMS16 hashtag on twitter and on then IRMS Conference 2016 app! The recording in the Oxford Suite, the app and the twitter stream are all things you can bring away from conference as an add onto what you’ve already learnt through the 2.5 days of being in Brighton.

IRMS Conference 2016: Thoughts from our Treasurer

I’ve been coming to conference since 2012 and each year it gets better and better. Now you’re probably thinking, “hang on as Treasurer and future chair surely he has to say that?”. And well you would be right, but it also happens to be true. And if you’ve ever had any interactions with me you’ll know I like to call a spade a spade (after all you can’t dig the garden up with a feather duster).

In an ever changing and growing sector it is important that Conference should grow and evolve with it. And this year is no exception. Our concept of ‘Superheroes’, for me, is very much about celebrating the skills and achievements of those in the sector today. The things we achieve on a daily basis which to you could be business as usual but to others are utter miracles in themselves. So it’s about time we get out our capes and celebrate the professional information superhero in all of us.

And speaking of heroes and the changing world in which we live in, I am especially looking forward to chairing the panel session on the Tuesday. As most of you know by now Privacy in all its forms is a bit of an key area of interest for me and with the arrival of any approved Regulation my geekiness has never been more excited. 

So with the help of 4 privacy superheroes, Dai Davis (Percy Crow Davis & Co), Richard Jeffrey Cook (Inform-Consult), Ralph o'Brien (TRUSTe) and Ibrahim Hasan (Act Now Training) we will explore the impending changing world of Records Management & Data Protection and what the future Privacy could look like. I say we because although the session is led by myself and our 4 superheroes we do want to explore your questions and areas of concern / interest. So I’ll see you there to have your privacy questions answered!
