2 December 2004 - North Group Meeting
Meeting Date: Thursday 2 December 2004
Meeting Theme: Countdown to Freedom of Information
Location: Clifford Whitworth Building, Peel Park Campus, University of Salford
The first meeting of RMS North was well attended, with 28 delegates making the trip to the University of Salford. The first presentation of the day was undertaken by Peter Kibby from Bramble.cc. Peter's talk focused on EDRM systems, and how they facilitate compliance with the Freedom of Information Act. Peter drew from his experience assisting numerous public sector organisations as Bramble.cc's principal consultant.
The second presentation took place after a short coffee break, and was undertaken by Paul Dodgson from Leicestershire County Council, who shared with us his experiences of implementing Freedom of Information Act compliant systems and processes within a large organisation. Paul covered topics such as evaluating FoI preparedness, training and awareness, records auditing, EDRM systems and FoI tracking tools. Both talks were followed by lively question and answer sessions.
Lunch, kindly sponsored by Bramble.cc, was followed by the first meeting of RMS North. The general meeting was followed by a lively group discussion on a wide variety of topics, including:
- Technology issues: the relationship between records management and information systems and technology
- Where records management fits within organisations
- Business cases for records management
- Digital preservation
- The National Archives guidelines: should we be following them?
- FoI compliance: how organisations should be taking a more strategic view of records management
- Formats for FoI: Braille, inaccessible formats
