1 January 1970 - Inaugural Meeting of the Scotland Group
Continuing the programme of RMS regional groups, intended to promote local grass-root activity in the Society, the first meeting of the RMS Scotland Group took place on Thursday 10th March at IDOX offices in Glasgow. The meeting was a great success, attracting over 34 participants with many others declaring interest in attending future meetings.
The theme of the day was implementing records management and included two excellent presentations from two distinct Scottish organisations. The first presentation was given by Susan Mansfield from Scottish Enterprise. Susan's talk focused on how records managers can demonstrate the value of records management. She started with some valuable advice on the essentials of getting noticed by senior management and having impact within an organisation. Susan then introduced her "value toolkit," a selection of models that she had made use of in order to demonstrate value, including:
- Balanced scorecard
- Stakeholder mapping
- Customer consultations
- SMART reports
- Performance indicators
The second presentation was given by Ken Glasgow, from the Scottish Executive. Ken gave us an overview of their EDRM's project, the reasons for its implementation, information on how they went about the project and the expected benefits. He provided some valuable insights into the problems and issues that arise along the way. Some of the key lessons learned highlighted by Ken were:
- EDRM is more about cultural change rather than technology.
- A successful implementation depends on: Education, Education, Education! and Communication, Communication, Communication!
- EDRM programmes must involve the user community from the outset (i.e. done with them not to them)
- Roll out must relate to and fit within the corporate pressures calendar
IDOX, who sponsored the day, kindly supplied wine and cheese after the meeting, providing delegates with an excellent opportunity to network and exchange their views and experiences. Given the noise levels I witnessed there was much networking and discussion taking place.
The energy and enthusiasm shown by the participants was very encouraging and a good indication that the Scottish Group is going places!
Details of the next meeting will be e-mailed to all participants and other RMS members in Scotland and placed on the RMS Web Site.
