Your submission
This can be in any format (written article, video, podcast or even poem – the sky is the limit!), based on a topic of your choosing.
The subject matter should be related to information, records or data, but can be about any aspect of it. Take a look at the insights below for some inspiration if you need it.
Your entry must:
- If it’s a written piece, then it is to be submitted in Word (or similar) format (no PDFs please) and be no more than 1000 words long.
- If pre-recorded, be in a media format that is playable on any device
- be in English, if possible. If this poses any issues for you, please contact is beforehand.
Unlike our other awards you do not need another person to nominate you and you do not need to be a current member of the IRMS.
However, if you are a student, IRMS student membership is free, so why not become one?
Insights into what we are looking for
Your submission could be anything, like imaginative future thinking or a different perspective on current practice, comment on the core fundamentals, a successful project or even a failed one and how it shaped your thinking. We would love to hear your new ideas on how to work with all things digital.
What we are looking for is something different. Alison was always known as a disruptor throughout her career and was always looking for fresh ideas, new approaches and challenging thoughts. Be bold, be brave, and share with our wonderful community what you think of the practice, the profession, or a specific topic.
We encourage also those who have discovered information and records management through another profession and may be involved in data and information management as part of another field such as governance, security, analytics, digital preservation, IT etc.
So have a think, and if you’re an IRMS member you can also read some of the previous submissions in the Resource Library.

Scott is now an experienced professional in the information profession and owns his own consulting firm Lighthouse IG.
Scott has also been a volunteer for the IRMS, getting so far as to be Chair in 2016-20, proving that any NPA can reach any heights!

“I’m a disruptor and like to do things in my own way. My own entry was light-hearted and encouraged us to look a different way at the then draft GDPR. What do you think the profession should or shouldn’t be doing? Make me think and/or make me laugh!”

History of Alison North and the NPA
Alison started her information management life in the oil and gas industry in Scotland where she became the first woman to work on a North Sea oil platform developing file management systems for the teams offshore.
Alison is a successful international businesswoman having founded and managed her company since 1986. She is a futurist and is constantly searching for better ways to manage information with integrity and value. She provides many of her services free of charge to small businesses and information professionals.
Alison is author of many papers and articles including the well-received book “Managing Records Retention and Disposal” (2009). She was honoured by the Information and Records Management Society in 2010 with a Lifetime Achievement Award and appointed a Fellow in 2013.
In 2016, Alison delivered a TED Talk on Information. Whilst we may believe that we have “too much information”, much of it is irrelevant and hides that which has the ability to deliver a better world. You can find the talk on YouTube and you can find Alison on Twitter or LinkedIn.
Alison founded the NPA in 2010 and has been its Patron ever since. Since 2010 there have been a total of 26 New Professional Award winners, including runners-up and joint winners! And including some names that have become well known in our industry like Katherine O’Keeffe, Hannah Burling, Scott Sammons, Jaana Pinnick, Claire Archibald plus loads more!
A big thank you to our partners and supporters for helping to deliver great services to our members
