wrote on the Geographic: Midlands wall: IRMS Midlands winter event: Accountability in the era of GDPR By Colin Sawers, IRMS Midlands Secretary The newly reformed Midlands Group met on the 4 December at the University of Nottingham. Members from across the Midlands came together for a half day event on ‘Accountability in the era of GDPR’. Lunch for the event was kindly sponsored by Oyster IMS. Emily Gresham the new Chair of the Midlands Group welcomed members to this first event of the newly reformed Midlands Group. Alan Shipman of Group 5 Training delivered a presentation on ‘Legal admissibility, privacy and ISO 15489. Alan talked about the latest developments included forthcoming changes to British Standards in a range of areas. His presentation also focussed on legal admissibility & evidential weight, privacy and records management. Simon Allen of Oyster IMS spoke about “GDPR – A view from an outsourcer’. Simon spoke about the services offered by Oyster IMS both in the lead up to the implementation of GDPR and also post GDPR. His presentation contained a number of useful examples of audit activities undertaken as well as day to day support offered to those in the field of GDPR. Scott Sammons of Lighthouse IG and current Chair or the IRMS Executive gave the final presentation of the morning ‘Being a grown up under GDPR’. Scott spoke about the importance of good records management in achieving a good level of Data Protection and the importance of staff in your organisation understanding their legal powers and obligations. For the first Midlands events after a gap it was good to have so many members attend. The next Midlands event will take place in the spring in the West Midlands and an e-mail will be sent when details have been finalised.
