To provide leadership in records and information management with the aims of:
- Championing the status of information and records management through representation, external liaison & promotion
- Supporting professional development through sharing knowledge and expertise;
- Promoting all aspects of good information and records management practice.
To do this, the Society supports and promotes activity across the profession as well as being active in advocacy for the profession and engaging in mutually-beneficial collaborations with other organisations for the benefit of both our membership and the wider profession.
What is information and records management?
Information and records management (also referred to as 'records management') is the collective term for the procedures by which an organisation manages, controls and uses its information assets. It covers information and records in all media and relates to how information is gathered, processed, stored, accessed, used, shared and, ultimately, when and how it is either permanently preserved or destroyed. Information Governance is a facet of information and records management, as are business processes improvement and knowledge management.
What is the Information and Records Management Society?
The Information and Records Management Society is the foremost professional association for all information professionals, regardless of their professional or organisational status or qualifications.
Formed in 1983 as the Records Management Society (RMS) with a clear commitment to inclusivity across the profession, the IRMS now has over 1000 members from the UK and around the world, and spanning the public, private and third sectors.
Membership of the Society is open to all and its membership rates are deliberately designed to be accessible to all.
Our Current Strategy
We are currently working along a 3-pronged programme of work looking at developing our Membership, our Content and work with our Partners. The Executive meets monthly via conference call to track progress against the work plan and highlight any issues with delivery before the end of the May-April constitutional year.

How we're governed
As a 'not-for-profit' membership organisation everything the IRMS does is governed by our Constitution and standing orders. Each volunteer agrees to be bound by it and it gives the Society structure and direction. Our volunteers are led locally by their Group Chairs & committees, and nationally by the IRMS Executive made up of Officers, Directors and the 4 Constitutional roles (Chair, Vice-Chair, Secretary and Treasurer).
The Executive produces an Annual Report for the AGM, summarising its activity and including the annual accounts. The AGM is typically held in May at the IRMS Conference. If you have any questions about how we are governed you can email our Secretary.
