In many organizations the Information Governance (IG) policies are long and confusing. Worse, they often sound like angry parents scolding naughty children. Adults bristle at disrespectfully worded statements, making compliance a battle. The reality is that we want our IG rules to sound strict but not sound confrontational. In this IRMS Legal Group session, Lewis S. Eisen session explores the relationship between the wording of our policies and the development of a favourable IG culture.

In her speech at the Conservative Party Conference on 3rd October 2022, Michelle Donelen the new minister in charge of data protection, gave notice of bigger changes to the UK Data Protection regime than envisaged in The Data Protection and Digital Information Bill.
“I am announcing that we will be replacing GDPR with our own business and consumer-friendly, British data protection system… In its place, we will co-design with business a new system of data protection. We will look to those countries who achieve data adequacy without having GDPR, like Israel, Japan, South Korea, Canada and New Zealand.”
In this session, Ibrahim Hasan of Act Now Training, examines the government’s plans and how they will impact the UK GDPR and PECR. Ibrahim will also analyse some of the latest news and enforcement action from the UK.

IRMS Public Sector: Cortana is coming: IRM challenges of AI & something called the ‘metaverse’.
The IRMS Public Sector Group is delighted to be joined by Scott Sammons to speak about Cortana, AI and the Metaverse!
Technological advances are proceeding at a pace that, for many of us, is quite alarming. The use of machine learning, algorithms, and AI (and now the threat of something called the ‘Metaverse’) presents some challenges to the traditional practices of Information and Records Management.
In this session we’ll explore some of the basics of AI, Machine learning and even the dreaded ‘Metaverse’ and what some of the key concerns are, therefore what some of the key questions are, and what we as IRM professionals can do to keep up with this new and coming (if it not already be here) areas of technology and ways of working.
In short, think all this is for the private sector and not for us public sector workers? Think again! All of this is creeping in slowly and for many is

Jaana, the IRMS Vice Chair at the time of recording, leads the development of a data and information governance framework and a digital preservation programme in her day job at the British Geological Survey and its associated National Geoscience Data Centre. She manages research data and corporate records, is an active member of the Digital Preservation Coalition under the UKRI umbrella, and initiated the IRMS Digital Preservation Interest Group in 2021.
Jaana guides us through the basic concepts and challenges in digital preservation before outlining how you can start developing a tailored programme for your organisation, and what areas you should consider when planning your approach. IRMS Legal and London Joint Event.
It never has been an Information and Records Manager’s job to set the world alight with futuristic ideas and evolutionary processes to manage data. We tend to stick to routine and tried and tested methods to manage the organisation’s information. But in this fast-paced world we need to step out of our comfort zone, innovate, disrupt and embed new technology in our planning. Strategic thinking considers innovation and new techniques and technology for the future; it encourages intuitive and creative thinking; it encourages interaction with others including people from all levels in the organisation. In this session, Alison North discusses strategic thinking in the context of the Information and Records Manager's work stimulates future thinking around leadership in our data and information management world.
